Netflix Greenlights Strahd While the Realms TV Deal Dies
Issue #010 · Week of September 04, 2026
This Week’s Verdict
Two D&D television projects entered the week and only one walked out, which is roughly the survival rate of a first-level party in a Shadowdark dungeon. The rest of the news is a quiet AI apology and the usual OSR jam harvest, so nobody is short on free PDFs.
Releases & Announcements
The screen news dominates. Per EN World, Netflix has a Ravenloft series in development and it will feature Strahd, while the long-rumored Forgotten Realms TV series is officially dead. Make of that what you will: the Mists get a camera crew, the Sword Coast gets a coffin.
On the book side, Ahu’s First Patrol is now live on DriveThruRPG after a slow crawl from Kickstarter, per marteloschwarz. Hit Point Press cross-posted its ENNIE-winning 5.5E supplement The Field Guide to Floral Dragons onto D&D Beyond. Baldman Games put out Legends of Greyhawk: Dreams of the Chained God, a three-adventure digital bundle for levels 5 to 10, also on D&D Beyond. Azukail Games announced adventure modules for its Sundara setting. Monte Cook Games brought Cypher to Roll20. For the sci-fi crowd, lategamer released We Go In, a non-violent career and mission generator for Traveller. And Old-School Essentials Quick Delve #4: Shadows and Flesh is in stock at Exalted Funeral, per The Gaming Gang.
Rules & Errata
No official errata from Wizards of the Coast, The Arcane Library, or Goodman Games crossed the wire this week. The nearest thing to a rules argument came from Moondog on the eternal Vancian casting debate, whose only real finding is that critics tend to propose replacements clunkier than the thing they hate. That is discourse, not errata.
For those actually at the table, Sly Flourish published a set of lazy improvised monster statistics for Daggerheart, aimed at building adversaries on the fly. Useful, unofficial, and honest about it.
The Community
The AI question resurfaced. Per EN World, Monte Cook Games replaced a promotional video and issued a statement after the original was found to contain AI assets, which Monte Cook condemned. A studio walking something back is more useful than a studio pretending nothing happened.
Elsewhere, the OSR jam scene stayed busy. The Mystic Woods OSR Adventure Jam on itch.io already logged 42 entries, with doomedzone contributing a CC0 piece. The Black Hack 10th Anniversary Jam wrapped, prompting review roundups from ng76 at Polyhedral Nonsense and a last-minute bestiary of evil clowns. The German-language Grenzland zine put out issue 8, themed on 2d6 games like Traveller and Cepheus Engine, free as a PDF, with a Reptiles issue slated for January 2027.
On the grumbling front, gcvsa delivered a full broadside against the current Hasbro-era 5e books, arguing rulebooks should function as rulebooks rather than art galleries, and naming Whitehack, The Window, and ICRPG as the counterexamples. ruckerworks reports that among six D&D and D&D-adjacent rule sets covered, Basic D&D (Moldvay) and Old-School Essentials Advanced Fantasy drew the most reader interest, which tells you where the crowd’s curiosity actually sits.
If you want practical table craft, Moondog also posted a reframing of the “miss” as narrative parry, dodge, or glancing blow, plus DnDFanatics ran an interview with veteran designer Shawn Merwin on where D&D goes next.
On the Horizon
The EN World RPG Crowdfunding roundup flagged Skullcrusher, Time Without Tide, and Jadestorm, among others, including new projects from Chaosium and Onyx Path Publishing and a one-dollar bargain worth a look. Seandar16 noted a Shadowdark title from meldar16 whose early-bird price closed, moving from $34.99 to $40. ShadowWest, pitched as Shadowdark meets the Weird West, has a video preview up. RockClanProductions is back working on The Old Sage for Pathfinder 2e after a bout of summer cold. And EN World teased its Podcast #412 livestream previewing Arcana Unleashed, new D&D video games, and a new world from the original Dark Sun creators, whose Dragon Kings setting has been updated to 5e.
