Dark Sun's Original Creators Reboot Their World for 5E

Issue #009 · Week of August 28, 2026

This Week’s Verdict

The old guard is back on the clock: Dragon Kings returns from the people who built Athas, and Wizards of the Coast is once again asking whether becoming a brain-eating psychic monster should be a career goal. If you like your desert dystopia with built-in psionics and your errata delivered as playtest PDFs, this was your week.

Releases & Announcements

The headline is Dragon Kings, a new 5E edition led by Timothy Brown and a group of veteran TSR designers, billed as the spiritual successor to Dark Sun by Athas’ original creators. It is on BackerKit, promises built-in psionics, and makes a point of advertising human-crafted art. EN World covered the announcement alongside the geeknative writeup.

On the official D&D side, Wizards of the Coast continues rolling out the Arcana Unleashed supplement and its campaign Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall, a level 11-20 espionage arc set in Thay against the Red Wizards and Szass Tam. WizKids is supporting it with a set of 47 pre-painted Deadfall miniatures. Also new: a Vestige Patron Warlock subclass surfaced in the Arcana Unleashed pages.

Elsewhere, Dark Horse Books and Massif Press are bringing two LANCER hardcovers to print, Operation Fulcrum Dawn and Setting Guide Volume 1, collecting introductory missions and setting material. Old-School Essentials gets an updated Referee’s Book edition arriving in November. And for the video game crowd, Dungeons & Dragons: Long Rest Tavern (a cozy business sim) and the Ravenloft-set Warlock were both announced for 2027.

Rules & Errata

No formal errata this week, but Wizards of the Coast dropped a new Unearthed Arcana: Underdark Options playtest featuring mind flayers and the option to become one. Tim Eagon noted the obvious, that turning into a brain-eating psychic monster used to be a bad ending rather than a build path. Treat it as a preview, not a rule, until it survives contact with the release schedule.

Nothing official landed for Shadowdark or DCC on the rules front. The OSE Referee’s Book reprint is a repackaging, not a rules revision, so temper expectations.

The Community

The retrospective mood ran deep. ruckerworks posted a six-way comparison review across AD&D, 1981 Basic (Moldvay), 2014 5e, 2024 5e, Old-School Essentials Advanced Fantasy, and Shadowdark, with full writeups per edition. Gnome Stew ran “As Your Table Ages,” a reflection from a 40-year veteran, and GoldenGrognard resurfaced the two-hour Gary Con VIII panel with the late Tim Kask, TSR’s first employee.

The Rpg Gazette published “D&D’s Problem With Being Exceptional,” and Azukail Games aired grievances in “YouTube is Screwing Small Creators Again.” On the smaller-creator front, Thought Punks is openly crowdfunding through medical costs, and meldar16 and Seandar16 kept beating the drum for the Shadowdark adventure Knights in White Satin with the year’s most self-aware hashtags. Sabre Games and Third Kingdom’s weekly OSR News Roundup gave several of them a signal boost.

Usual practical advice from Sly Flourish (restate quest goals at session start; write fresh prep notes each session) and a campaign-ending “credits montage” tip making the rounds on Bluesky.

On the Horizon

Besides Dragon Kings on BackerKit, EN World flagged another million-dollar TTRPG campaign in its crowdfunding roundup, plus new material from Monte Cook Games including Cypher and Monsters of Rend World. In DCC land, The Sorcerer’s Conundrum, a DCC adventure zine from nerdronomicon, was in its final hours on BackerKit as a featured project. The OSE Referee’s Book and the two LANCER hardcovers all land later this year, and Gary’s Appendix Issue #10 is out for the Hells-inclined.
