D&D Goes Universes Beyond: Star Wars, WoW, and 18+ Dark Sun

Gen Con happened, and Wizards of the Coast used its keynote to confirm that Dungeons & Dragons now runs on the Universes Beyond model, meaning Star Wars, World of Warcraft, and a season structure borrowed from a live-service game. Meanwhile the man who oversaw the shift, John Hight, announced he is leaving. Read into that what you will.

Releases & Announcements

The D&D Vision Keynote 2027 was the week, so we will take it in order. Wizards of the Coast announced Universes Beyond, its licensed-crossover line, opening with a 250-plus page World of Warcraft book landing this November and Star Wars arriving in 2027 for the so-called Season of Rebellion. This is the first official D&D and Star Wars pairing since the early 2000s.

Dark Sun returns in 2027 as D&D’s first 18-plus rated setting, shipping as two books (one carrying the new Psion class) with content warnings for slavery, nudity, and violence. Reactions to the trailer were, charitably, mixed.

Beyond the crossovers, Wizards announced the Icons line, headed by Joe Manganiello, pairing legacy creators like Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, and R.A. Salvatore with current designers to revisit Dragonlance, Greyhawk, and Drizzt. Greyhawk: Crown of the Witch Queen, a 160-page villain-focused adventure featuring Drelzna, daughter of Iggwilv, headlines the Season of Sword & Sorcery in mid-2027. Wizards also confirmed third-party publishing partners: Ghostfire Gaming on Ravenloft, Visionary on an Eberron adventure, and Kobold Press on Forgotten Realms material. D&D Beyond gets unspecified improvements in 2027.

Elsewhere, Paizo delivered its own Gen Con keynote laying out a year of Pathfinder and Starfinder plans. Vampire: The Masquerade is getting a new edition with more games to follow, no date given, and The One Ring is getting a new edition plus a hardcover bestiary via crowdfunder.

Rules & Errata

No formal errata this week, which is what happens when the publisher spends its bandwidth on licensing deals rather than fixing rules. The only mechanical news of substance is the new Psion class arriving with the 18-plus Dark Sun books in 2027, and the confirmation that all these products (World of Warcraft, Greyhawk, Dark Sun) sit on the 2024 5.5E ruleset. Shadowdark and DCC produced community adventures this week, covered below, but nothing official from The Arcane Library or Goodman Games.

The Community

The discourse split cleanly. One camp, represented by @misuba, floated the hot take that Universes Beyond is better news for D&D than for Magic. Another, more numerous camp, worked through the stages of grief: @keylie asked in German whether D&D is now doing “dumb collabs,” while several posters noted we have entered the “slap it on everything” phase. @JediSoth made the reasonable structural argument that cramming any setting into the most popular system of the moment produces a worse game than a purpose-built one.

RPGBOT.Podcast summarized the 2026-2027 schedule as “a roadmap written in blood and marketing,” which is about the tone of it. Tim Eagon watched the age-restricted Dark Sun trailer and had questions. Away from the keynote, the OSR corner carried on as usual: the Appendix N Jam 2026 on itch.io crossed 157 entries, and the perennial unified-versus-individual XP table debate resurfaced courtesy of @randomwizard. Mike Shea made his rounds promoting Rise of the Lazy Game Master on Gnomecast and his own Sly Flourish blog.

On the Horizon

Crowdfunding season is thick with Gen Con timing. Kobold Press has Underworld: Sunless Depths on Kickstarter for 5E and Tales of the Valiant. The One Ring new edition crowdfunder brings the bestiary and a campaign expansion. EN World’s roundup flagged The Guild 20th anniversary, HackMaster XXV, and a new Steve Jackson Games offering as the Gen Con-week projects to watch.

In the Shadowdark and DCC space, Nerdronomicon’s The Sorcerer’s Conundrum, a level-2 adventure zine for DCC RPG, has one week left with free VTT tokens on BackerKit. Vigilantes for Shadowdark 2 hit Copper on DriveThruRPG. Michael Putlack’s folklore-flavored Attack the White Mare for Shadowdark is funding. And Mike Shea’s Rise of the Lazy Game Master Kickstarter continues its march. Modest, table-facing releases, all of them. Some of us prefer it that way.
