It attacks with eye rays, which is what draws attention, but its real function is as a fey sentinel: when intruders come near, it raises an alarm. Kill it slow and you win the fight while losing the dungeon, because everything downstairs now knows you are coming.

The math argues for haste. Armor class 10 means most attacks land. Movement of 20 feet means it cannot outrun anything, and it presents an easy target for ranged fire. The exploitable detail is its vulnerability to fire, which deals double damage. A creature that fragile does not survive a committed opening volley, and a dead sentinel triggers no alarm.

So the encounter is a race, not a slugfest. The threat is not the Peerer’s damage output. The threat is the round in which it stays alive long enough to sound off. Every turn spent trading blows conventionally is a turn it spends calling for help.

At the table: Open on the Peerer with a fire attack from range before melee closes, banking on double damage to drop it in one exchange and silence the alarm.

On a successful cast it moves you, plus one willing creature, to any point you can see within 500 feet. That is the whole mechanic. No damage, no control, just relocation.

The waste case is predictable. A player burns a tier-4 slot to slide behind cover or close ten feet on a target already in reach. That is a move action dressed up as a spell. The value of Dimension Door sits in the problems ordinary movement cannot answer: the pit you cannot cross, the door that will not open before the horde arrives, the fight you need to leave while you still can. It is an exit and a bypass, not a positioning tweak.

The 500-foot limit and the “point you can see” clause are the guardrails. Line of sight keeps it honest. If the player cannot see the far ledge, they cannot land on it, and no amount of confident description changes that.

At the table: When a player asks to Dimension Door “just past the guard,” ask what they can actually see; if the answer is the guard’s back, they’ve spent a tier-4 slot to walk five feet.

This Week’s Verdict

Gen Con wrapped and the announcement cannon is still smoking: Wizards of the Coast wants your 2027 wallet reserved for Dark Vader and dying deserts. Meanwhile the awards circuit did what it does, and an actual working toy store beat out a slate of nominees for the Diana Jones. A good week for lore, a slow week for anyone waiting on actual errata.

Releases & Announcements

The Gen Con haul is the story. Tribality reports that D&D will cross over into Star Wars in 2027, teased at the D&D Vision Keynote 2027 with a Darth Vader shot and the phrase “Season of Rebellion,” which points at the Galactic Civil War era. Details are thin, as they always are this far out. There is also a licensing wrinkle worth noting: EN World confirms Edge Studios has NOT lost the Star Wars license, so two things can apparently be true at once.

The other big reveal is the return of Dark Sun in February 2027, pitched by Wizards of the Coast as the game’s first setting built for mature audiences, with the expected Athas menu of scarcity, sorcerer-kings, and gladiatorial unpleasantness. Joe Manganiello’s Death Saves: The Blood War setting also got new details at the show, per DnDFanatics.

Elsewhere on the product shelf: Azukail Games put out Guns of Sundara for firearms in the Sundara setting, Story Mode Productions released the Greek folk-horror Erebus Mythos for Shadowdark, and thoughtpunks shipped the modern vampire game Vermillion Vespers. EN World’s RPG Print News roundup covers new supplements for Call of Cthulhu, Traveller, Cyberpunk Red, Shadowrun, Rifts, and MCC RPG, among others.

Rules & Errata

Nothing official this week. The closest thing to rules content is homebrew and analysis: a framework and new feat for cultural language in D&D 5.5e from Stephen Collins, and RPGBOT’s podcast breakdown of the remastered 2014 Ranger at levels 1 through 4. Useful, not canonical. The digest notes the absence and moves on.

The Community

Awards season delivered. The 2026 ENnies winners are posted at EN World, with Chaosium’s RuneQuest inducted into the Hall of Fame. Keith Ammann’s Making Enemies (Spy and Owl) took Gold for Best Writing, a fact its author repeated across roughly five posts this week in case you missed it the first four times. The Diana Jones Award went to the Mischief Toy Store, beating a nominee slate that included the late Rob Weiland, an EN World columnist who passed earlier this year. And in the “wins before shipping” file, EN World notes the newly announced D&D Icons line collected an award without having produced anything yet, which is a bold move even by hobby standards.

Gen Con itself grew to 74,000 attendees, holding its spot as the world’s second largest tabletop gaming convention.

On the discourse front, the OSR crowd stayed busy with the Appendix N jam on Bluesky, and JediSoth’s RPGaDay2026 entry about the Ptolus Brotherhood of Redemption doubled as a cautionary tale: a debate over whether monsters are inherently evil ended a real game in an in-character and out-of-character fight. The eternal lesson that alignment arguments are load-bearing. Also worth a nod, Gnome Stew ran an honest confession about being bad at running published adventures after decades of homebrew, which is more relatable than most people admit.

On the Horizon

Crowdfunding is where the near-term action is. Sly Flourish’s Rise of the Lazy Gamemaster Kickstarter is in its final days, with a free preview available. Nerdronomicon’s The Sorcerer’s Conundrum, a DCC RPG adventure zine tied to Goodman Games, is live on BackerKit with early-backer bonuses. Pelgrane Press is running Merryshire Detective Club on BackerKit. ruckerworks put out a free 12-page core-rules preview for Ashes of Isar, a WWII SOE espionage game.

Previews of note: Monte Cook Games’ Cypher Character Rulebook got a live first look on The Gaming Gang Dispatch, and on the collectible side, ICv2 has a preview of the Magic: The Gathering - The Hobbit Play Booster display.

Those numbers point in opposite directions. The hit points say it dies in one solid turn. The AC says landing that turn is not guaranteed, especially at levels 1 through 3 when attack bonuses are thin and a miss is a wasted round while the goblin acts again.

The AC is Dexterity, not plate. That same Dexterity feeds a Stealth of +6 and its Nimble Escape feature, which lets it Disengage or Hide as a bonus action every turn. So it strikes, breaks contact, and vanishes, then reappears with advantage from an unseen position. Parties that treat it as a damage sponge keep whiffing at a thing that refuses to hold still. The problem was never its hit points. It was its mobility and its line of sight.

Take those away and AC 15 stops mattering. A goblin that cannot move cannot Disengage its way out of reach, and a goblin you can see cannot Hide.

At the table: Cast Entangle (restrained goblins have speed 0 and grant advantage on attacks, and you no longer care whether you beat AC 15).

You roll a spell check, d20 plus caster level plus your Intelligence or Personality modifier, against the target number printed on the spell. The result column tells you the effect, and it also tells you the important part: whether the spell is lost.

A natural 1 is a misfire or corruption depending on the spell, and it is always lost. Beyond that, most arcane spells are lost on any check that fails or lands in the lower success bands. Clerics are worse off, since their disapproval range grows every time they fail, dragging the odds down further across the day. Roll poorly twice in a row and a wizard who started the crawl with six spells is holding two, with no rest in sight. The dice, not a resource budget, decide when the book goes quiet.

This is the whole tension of DCC casting. Power is uncapped on a hot roll, but so is the risk of going dry at the worst moment.

At the table: Before a fight, ask the wizard which spells they still have available after the morning’s checks, not which spells they know. Those are different lists.

It is about picking the right spell for the wrong reason. A player looks at the battle mat, sees a five-foot gap, and burns a resource that was built to reshape the entire encounter. Spell Use Case is the difference between a caster who fills a hole in the grid and one who removes the problem that made the grid matter. The rules already tell you which is which. You just have to read what a spell actually does before deciding what it is for.

Start with the two teleport-adjacent options, because they are the most commonly wasted. Dimension Door is a 4th-tier spell with an instant duration and self range, and it moves you plus one willing creature to a point you can see. That instant self-range teleport changes positioning, not damage output. Spend it to shuffle five feet closer to a target and you have thrown away a strategic tool for a tactical fidget. The correct use is bypassing an obstacle wholesale or escaping a threat that would otherwise end you. Passwall lives in the same trap. It has Close range, lasts 5 rounds, and opens a tunnel of your height in a straight line up to near distance through a barrier you touch. Casting Passwall to improve a firing angle inside a room misses the point entirely. Its value is bypassing obstacles, reaching hidden areas, and turning a sealed environment into information you did not have a minute ago. Both spells answer the question “how do I get past this,” not “how do I get one square better positioned.”

Two more spells fail for a related reason: players ignore that they cost Focus. Magic Circle creates a near-sized cube centered on the caster that stops a named creature type from attacking or casting hostile spells, and it holds only as long as Focus holds. Break Focus and the protection ends immediately, which leaves the caster exactly as exposed as before. That makes Magic Circle a spell for controlled situations. Negotiation, a held position, a moment where you know you will not be jostled. If someone can disrupt the caster, the circle is a liability dressed as a wall. Spidersilk carries the same Focus condition, with duration keyed to Focus rather than a set number of rounds. Casting it simply because it is on the list wastes it. Timed correctly, it forces enemy movement, disrupts their actions, and shortens the fight. The lesson under both is the same: a Focus spell is a commitment, and you should know what the commitment buys before you make it.

Finger Of Death rounds out the group as the clearest case of misapplied thinking. It has Close range and instant duration, and it kills a creature of level 9 or less outright. Read as a damage spell, it looks like an expensive way to remove some hit points. Read correctly, it is a scalpel. The target is not the enemy with the biggest health bar. The target is the one creature whose removal collapses the encounter: the summoner, the commander, the thing keeping the others coordinated. You are not reducing a total, you are deleting a variable.

The through-line across all five is discipline about purpose. Dimension Door and Passwall bypass. Magic Circle and Spidersilk require Focus and therefore require a plan. Finger Of Death decides. None of them exist to nudge a miniature one square. When a player asks what a spell is for, the honest answer is written in its range, duration, and effect, and it almost never says “grid optimization.”

Running it: Before any spell is cast, ask the player what problem it solves; if the answer is “I move a little,” make them read the entry again.

Read those numbers and you will conclude it is a speed bump. Nine hit points is one good hit from most anything. The table sees fragile and treats the encounter as a formality, sending one character forward to swat it.

That is the mistake, and it is a mechanical one. The bite forces a DC 12 Constitution save. Fail, and the character is paralyzed for 1d4 rounds. A paralyzed character is not inconvenienced, they are removed from the fight and left standing among whatever else the spider brought. The creature’s low hit points only save you if you kill it before it lands the bite, and a lone attacker rolling once per round is betting a bad save against a coin flip. Fragile and dangerous are not opposites here. They coexist.

The correct answer is concentration of force: multiple attacks in the first round, before anyone gives up their turn to a failed Constitution check.

At the table: When the spider bites, call for the DC 12 Constitution save immediately, then narrate the paralysis by having the player physically set their die aside for 1d4 rounds so the loss of turns is visible, not abstract.

Cone of Cold runs 5 charges. Ice Storm and Wall of Ice cost 4 each. Fog Cloud costs 1. Attuning to the staff also grants resistance to cold damage for as long as you hold it, and that costs nothing at all. It is passive, permanent while held, and easy to forget you have.

The math punishes greed. The staff regains only 1d6 + 4 charges at dawn, so a single Cone of Cold empties more than half your reserve. Spend the last charge and roll a 1, and the staff crumbles to ice. That risk exists solely on the final charge, which means the expensive spells are also the ones most likely to end the item.

Fog Cloud is the exception worth remembering. One charge for a 20-foot-radius sphere of heavy obscurement is a genuine bargain, and it never comes close to triggering the destruction check. Blocking sightlines, breaking pursuit, or covering a retreat rarely calls for the big guns.

At the table: Drop Fog Cloud across a chokepoint to cover the party’s exit, keeping the four remaining charges intact for one Ice Storm when the fight actually turns.

Its fiendish greatsword lands for 1d10+5 plus firebrand, and the firebrand rider is the part tables consistently forget until someone is on fire.

The real feature is nightmare of dead generations, usable once per day. It is a tempo weapon, not a damage tick, and it rewards the judge who holds it rather than firing it on round one. Players who dump every resource into the opening exchange will have nothing left when the ability reshapes the fight. That is the encounter’s single hard question: spend now to end it fast, or bank your best options against the turn the Avatar decides to change the terms.

Build the seed around that decision. Clear stakes, one reversal, and enough runway that hoarding versus committing actually matters.

At the table: Hold nightmare of dead generations until the party has clearly committed their strongest spells, then trigger it the round after, when they have the least in reserve.

This Week’s Verdict

Gen Con happened, and Wizards of the Coast used its keynote to confirm that Dungeons & Dragons now runs on the Universes Beyond model, meaning Star Wars, World of Warcraft, and a season structure borrowed from a live-service game. Meanwhile the man who oversaw the shift, John Hight, announced he is leaving. Read into that what you will.

Releases & Announcements

The D&D Vision Keynote 2027 was the week, so we will take it in order. Wizards of the Coast announced Universes Beyond, its licensed-crossover line, opening with a 250-plus page World of Warcraft book landing this November and Star Wars arriving in 2027 for the so-called Season of Rebellion. This is the first official D&D and Star Wars pairing since the early 2000s.

Dark Sun returns in 2027 as D&D’s first 18-plus rated setting, shipping as two books (one carrying the new Psion class) with content warnings for slavery, nudity, and violence. Reactions to the trailer were, charitably, mixed.

Beyond the crossovers, Wizards announced the Icons line, headed by Joe Manganiello, pairing legacy creators like Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, and R.A. Salvatore with current designers to revisit Dragonlance, Greyhawk, and Drizzt. Greyhawk: Crown of the Witch Queen, a 160-page villain-focused adventure featuring Drelzna, daughter of Iggwilv, headlines the Season of Sword & Sorcery in mid-2027. Wizards also confirmed third-party publishing partners: Ghostfire Gaming on Ravenloft, Visionary on an Eberron adventure, and Kobold Press on Forgotten Realms material. D&D Beyond gets unspecified improvements in 2027.

Elsewhere, Paizo delivered its own Gen Con keynote laying out a year of Pathfinder and Starfinder plans. Vampire: The Masquerade is getting a new edition with more games to follow, no date given, and The One Ring is getting a new edition plus a hardcover bestiary via crowdfunder.

Rules & Errata

No formal errata this week, which is what happens when the publisher spends its bandwidth on licensing deals rather than fixing rules. The only mechanical news of substance is the new Psion class arriving with the 18-plus Dark Sun books in 2027, and the confirmation that all these products (World of Warcraft, Greyhawk, Dark Sun) sit on the 2024 5.5E ruleset. Shadowdark and DCC produced community adventures this week, covered below, but nothing official from The Arcane Library or Goodman Games.

The Community

The discourse split cleanly. One camp, represented by @misuba, floated the hot take that Universes Beyond is better news for D&D than for Magic. Another, more numerous camp, worked through the stages of grief: @keylie asked in German whether D&D is now doing “dumb collabs,” while several posters noted we have entered the “slap it on everything” phase. @JediSoth made the reasonable structural argument that cramming any setting into the most popular system of the moment produces a worse game than a purpose-built one.

RPGBOT.Podcast summarized the 2026-2027 schedule as “a roadmap written in blood and marketing,” which is about the tone of it. Tim Eagon watched the age-restricted Dark Sun trailer and had questions. Away from the keynote, the OSR corner carried on as usual: the Appendix N Jam 2026 on itch.io crossed 157 entries, and the perennial unified-versus-individual XP table debate resurfaced courtesy of @randomwizard. Mike Shea made his rounds promoting Rise of the Lazy Game Master on Gnomecast and his own Sly Flourish blog.

On the Horizon

Crowdfunding season is thick with Gen Con timing. Kobold Press has Underworld: Sunless Depths on Kickstarter for 5E and Tales of the Valiant. The One Ring new edition crowdfunder brings the bestiary and a campaign expansion. EN World’s roundup flagged The Guild 20th anniversary, HackMaster XXV, and a new Steve Jackson Games offering as the Gen Con-week projects to watch.

In the Shadowdark and DCC space, Nerdronomicon’s The Sorcerer’s Conundrum, a level-2 adventure zine for DCC RPG, has one week left with free VTT tokens on BackerKit. Vigilantes for Shadowdark 2 hit Copper on DriveThruRPG. Michael Putlack’s folklore-flavored Attack the White Mare for Shadowdark is funding. And Mike Shea’s Rise of the Lazy Game Master Kickstarter continues its march. Modest, table-facing releases, all of them. Some of us prefer it that way.
