Cacklerot
Cacklerot is a tier 2 Priest spell in Shadowdark, Close range, duration Focus. It targets one creature of level 4 or lower and renders it helpless, consumed by laughter, for as long as you keep concentrating. There is no saving throw written into it. The creature does not get a roll to shrug it off. It simply stops being a combatant.
That last detail is the whole spell. Damage spells argue with hit points. Cacklerot argues with the fight itself. Spend it on a minion and you have wasted a spell slot and a Focus that could have been holding something worse in place. Spend it on the one enemy whose actions actually decide the encounter, and you have deleted that enemy’s turn for the duration, no dice involved. The cost is attention: Focus means one maintained spell at a time, and a hit on the caster risks ending it.
The level 4 ceiling keeps it honest. It will not neutralize a boss, but it reliably answers the dangerous lieutenant standing behind the boss.
At the table: Facing an ogre (level 4) escorting a necromancer, cast Cacklerot on the ogre, hold Focus, and let the party collapse on the caster while the muscle laughs itself useless.
