The Chuul's Tax on Melee
In D&D 5e, the Chuul’s Multiattack is two claws plus Tentacles. Get grappled by both claws, and the Tentacles trigger: a DC 13 Constitution save or you are poisoned for one minute. While poisoned this way, you are also paralyzed. That is the real bill. Paralysis means you auto-fail Strength and Dexterity saves, and any attack that reaches you within five feet is an automatic critical hit. The Chuul then eats at advantage against a target that cannot move.
The durability backs the threat. AC 16 and 79 hit points at CR 4 mean it absorbs a melee party’s output long enough to lock down a frontliner. It has advantage on Wisdom saves while within sixty feet of an aberration, which matters if you planned to Hold or Frighten your way out.
The counter is distance. Ranged attacks and spells that force saves rather than roll to hit never feed the critical-hit clause, because the Chuul never grapples you in the first place.
At the table: Open the fight with the Chuul submerged and only its tentacles breaking the surface, then let the first melee striker who closes get grappled and fail the save. The table learns the rule faster than any warning would teach it.
