The Gargantuan Lizard's Patient Mouth

The Gargantuan Lizard runs 10d8 hit dice behind an armor class of 17. That is a long fight by Dungeon Crawl Classics math, enough that a party will commit to melee and stay committed, which is precisely the mistake.

The bite does 3d4, unremarkable on its own. The attached swallow whole is the part that matters, and it is the part no one checks for until a character is already down a creature’s throat with the rest of the group standing outside wondering where their fighter went. Movement 40’ with a 20’ climb speed means the lizard decides the engagement range, not the party.

Its Reflex save sits at +8, which sounds high and is the softest number on the sheet relative to everything else. Spells and attacks keyed to Reflex are the honest answer here. The dishonest answer is walking up and swinging, which the stat block is quietly built to reward with a stomach.

At the table: When a player declares a confident charge into melee, roll the bite in the open, hit, and narrate the swallow before you announce the mechanic. Let them learn the rule from the inside.
