Control Ice, Read for Range
Dungeon Crawl Classics lists Control Ice among the wizard’s elemental spells, and most tables run it as a damage line. That reading misses the number that actually does the work. The range scales at 20 feet per caster level, which turns a modest-looking spell into a tool for shaping ground well beyond the caster’s immediate reach.
The spell can raise barriers of ice or loose freezing blasts, but barriers are the point. A wall placed thirty feet ahead of a fleeing enemy is worth more than a few dice of cold damage landed on a target already engaged. The common error is reactive casting: waiting until something is in your face, then spending the spell on hit points instead of geography. Spend it on geography.
Treat the range as a drawing compass, not a dart. At fifth level that is a hundred feet of reach, enough to seal a corridor, split a charge, or strand a flanker on the wrong side of a new wall before the enemy commits.
At the table: When pursued through a passage, cast Control Ice at maximum range to wall the exit behind the enemy’s lead element, cutting their retreat before they reach it.
