The Glabrezu's Death Clause
The glabrezu (D&D 5e, Monster Manual) is a demon built to outlast you. AC 17, 189 hit points, 40-foot speed, and a Multiattack that pairs two pincer strikes (each of which can grapple) with a bite. Grapple a target with both claws and it can bite a third time. The math is deliberate: it closes, it holds, and it chews through anyone who lingers in reach.
The part parties forget is Demonic Restoration. A demon reduced to 0 hit points outside the Abyss does not die. Its body is destroyed, but it returns to the Abyss. Kill it on the Material Plane and you have not killed it. You have mailed it home. Permanent death requires dropping it inside the Abyss itself, which most adventuring parties are not standing in when the fight happens.
This reframes the encounter. The glabrezu is not trying to survive. It is trying to spend its time well before its body gives out, because the body is disposable. Every round it keeps a character grappled is a round banked against a death that costs it nothing.
At the table: Run the glabrezu outside the Abyss and play it fearlessly. It fights to a standstill, taunts the “win,” and reforms at home while the party celebrates a corpse that was never the problem.
