The Minor Air Elemental Wants Open Sky

The Minor Air Elemental in Dungeon Crawl Classics is an encounter you read off the map before you read off the stat block. AC 13 and Hit Dice from 2d8 to 6d8 mean it soaks more punishment than its “minor” label suggests, and +3 initiative means it usually acts first. Its whirlwind scatters loose ranks and breaks the line you spent three rounds forming.

The mistake judges make is running it in a featureless room, which is precisely the arena it was built to dominate. Sixty feet of flight plus a mobility advantage in open air lets it dictate every exchange. Give it space and it will use all of it.

So don’t. The creature’s power is contingent on terrain, and terrain belongs to the judge. Choke points, low ceilings, columns, and elevation are the levers. A wall at its back is worth more than any single melee attacker, because it converts the elemental’s greatest asset, movement, into a liability.

At the table: Set the fight in a colonnade or a narrow stair with a 10-foot ceiling, then let the party herd it into a corner where the 60-foot flight and +3 initiative buy it nothing.
