The Ring of Invisibility's Fine Print
In Shadowdark, the Ring of Invisibility lets you cast the invisibility spell once per day. That is the headline. The clause underneath it is the one that matters. Every rest you take while owning the ring carries a cumulative 1% chance of being wrecked by apocalyptic nightmares. Miss the first roll, the odds climb the next time, and the next, until the dreams finally arrive. Then the counter resets to 1% and the climb begins again.
A ruined rest is not a flavor note. It means no recovery, and eventually it means exhaustion arriving at the worst possible moment, usually the morning after you leaned on the ring to slip past something you should have fought or avoided. The math is patient. Owning the ring for a long stretch makes the bad night a matter of when, not if.
The item is powerful precisely because escape is cheap. The nightmares are the tax. Treat the ring as an occasional tool with a fallback plan, not the whole plan.
At the table: GMs, roll the cumulative 1% at every rest and note the running total on the character sheet, so the ruined night lands as bookkeeping the players watched build, not a GM ambush.
