The Cave Fisher's Filament

In D&D, the Cave Fisher hunts the way its name promises. Its filament shoots out to 60 feet, and a target that fails a Fortitude DC 12 save is stuck fast to the strand. That save is the cheap part. The trouble starts after.

Once stuck, freeing yourself demands a Strength DC 16 check, which is a real wall for most characters who are not built for it. Meanwhile the Cave Fisher reels its catch in 10 feet per round. Do the arithmetic on a 60-foot line: two rounds of failed checks and the “trapped at range” problem becomes an “adjacent to the predator” problem. The creature also ignores difficult terrain on rock and cave surfaces, so it repositions while your party is still calculating.

None of this matters in an open cavern where allies can converge. It matters in a corridor, where the reeled target passes nobody who can help and the DC 16 check is the only exit.

At the table: Place a Cave Fisher at the end of a single-file tunnel and target the rearmost PC, so the reel drags them away from the marching order rather than toward the rescue.
