The Basilisk's Ledger
The Basilisk does not negotiate. Meet its gaze or suffer its touch and you roll a DC 15 Constitution save against petrification. Most parties treat Constitution as the throwaway stat, the one the wizard dumps and the rogue forgets. The Basilisk exists specifically to collect on that decision.
Do the arithmetic before the players do. A DC 15 save is a coin flip for a well-built fighter and a near-certain loss for anyone who neglected the stat. Over multiple rounds, “possible” becomes “inevitable.” The creature’s saving grace, for the party, is a Dexterity of 1. It is slow and it is a soft target for ranged attackers who never close to melee and never look directly at it.
The tactical answer is unglamorous and correct: distance, missiles, and eyes elsewhere. The Basilisk rewards patience and punishes bravado, which is a rare and useful thing to put in front of a table that has grown comfortable.
At the table: Place the Basilisk in a cave lined with weathered stone figures in mid-flight poses, then say nothing. Let the players decide on their own whether those are statues or the last three adventurers who walked in.
