The Sixteen Inert Damage Types

The 2024 Player’s Handbook lists sixteen damage types in the Rules Glossary: Acid, Bludgeoning, Cold, Fire, Force, Lightning, Necrotic, Piercing, Poison, Psychic, Radiant, Slashing, and Thunder. That entry is a taxonomy, not a rulebook. A damage type does nothing on its own. It is a label that other mechanics read.

Those other mechanics are where the effects live. Resistance halves damage of a stated type. Immunity reduces it to zero. Vulnerability doubles it. A Red Dragon’s Fire Breath deals damage on a failed Dexterity save (DC 21 for an adult), and the Fire type only matters because the target might resist it. Fire damage does not set the tavern alight. The Fireball spell says so explicitly: it ignites flammable objects that are not being worn or carried. No such clause, no fire. Cold damage does not freeze a lake. Poison damage does not inflict the Poisoned condition unless something separate imposes it.

The disputes come from players treating the type as the effect. It is only ever a key that unlocks another rule, or fails to.

At the table: When a player argues their Fire Bolt should ignite the rope bridge, ask which line grants that. Fire Bolt does: it lights unattended flammable objects. Chill Touch does not, so the bridge stays frozen and intact.
