Mother Of Night Bills You for Failure

In Shadowdark, most spells that fail just cost you the casting. You lose the spell for the day, you move on. Mother Of Night, a tier 5 spell with a range of Self and an instant duration, does not extend that courtesy. Fail the check and you are pulled into The Nightfall, where you remain until you appease it.

That reframes the whole decision. A blown roll on an ordinary spell is a wasted action. A blown roll here removes the caster from the scene entirely, with an open-ended cost attached to the word “appease.” This is not a spell for a last-ditch swing when everything is already on fire. It is a spell for moments when you can afford to lose, because losing means leaving.

The mechanical trap is the asymmetry. Players read “tier 5, Self, instant” and price it like a big utility spell. They are not pricing the exit tax, because the tax has no fixed number. That ambiguity is the point, and it belongs to the GM.

At the table: Before anyone casts Mother Of Night, decide privately what The Nightfall wants as appeasement, so a failure has a defined path back and isn’t just an indefinite disappearance.
