The Awakened Tree Plays Defense
The Awakened Tree is not a chaser. Its speed is 20 feet, which means any party with legs can kite it into the next zip code. What it has instead is durability and a big stick. AC 13 and 59 hit points are enough to shrug off a low-level party’s opening rounds, and its Slam lands for 3d6 + 4 bludgeoning off a Strength score of 19. That is a real threat to a first- or second-level character who wanders into reach.
The soft spot is control, and the tree resists most of it. Constitution 15 props up the saves that matter against effects trying to incapacitate or knock it out, so “just stun the tree” tends to disappoint. The exploitable stat is Dexterity 6. Anything keyed to a Dexterity save, or any area spell that pins it in place, works against a creature that cannot dodge and cannot reposition.
Terrain decides everything here. In open ground the tree loses because it cannot close. In dense forest the 20-foot speed stops mattering because nobody can leave.
At the table: Put the Awakened Tree in tight woods on a narrow path, so melee characters must stand in Slam range to get past it.
