The Smilodon's Two-Attack Math

In Shadowdark, the Smilodon reads like a joke stat block. AC 12, 14 hit points, nothing that screams threat. That reading survives exactly until the first round, when it uses its movement to reach a target and makes both of its attacks against it.

The mistake is treating “near” as safe. The Smilodon moves near, then attacks, and its action economy assumes a table that has left something soft standing within reach. Two attacks per turn against an unarmored caster is not a joke. Fourteen hit points also means it does not fold to a single lucky hit, so it gets multiple turns to keep applying that math. The damage that follows is not the monster being undertuned. It is the party being out of position.

Distance is the whole defense here. The creature has no ranged option and no way to punish a group that keeps it at a range it cannot cross and swing in the same turn. Control the engagement and the stat block goes back to being unremarkable.

At the table: Keep your low-HP characters more than the Smilodon’s movement plus reach away, and force it to spend a full turn just arriving before it ever gets to bite twice.
