Word of Radiance

D&D 5e’s Word of Radiance is a cleric cantrip that deals 1d6 radiant damage and forces a Constitution saving throw. The detail everyone forgets is the targeting: it hits every creature you choose within 5 feet of you, not one. It is an area cantrip disguised as a throwaway.

That design cuts two ways. Point it at a single high-Constitution brute and you will watch it save its way through your turn while you deal a die of nothing. The math does not favor you against anything built to shrug off Constitution checks. The spell was never meant for that fight.

It was meant for the swarm. When four or five low-Constitution bodies close to melee range, one action rolls a saving throw against each of them, and the failures add up faster than any single-target cantrip could manage. The 5-foot radius, once a liability, becomes the whole point.

At the table: When kobolds or cultists pile in around your cleric, cast Word of Radiance instead of Sacred Flame. One roll of 1d6 against every adjacent low-Con target clears more of the crowd than picking them off one at a time.
